For the last ten to fifteen years or more I’ve been describing the behavior of the American left, especially its street mobs, along with the post modern ideological positions it has adopted, as “insane” because no other term seemed adequate. The denial of the reality of biological sex differences found universally among mammals, for instance, seemed rooted in some form of bizarre irrationality.

The foaming at the mouth fury of what appear to be otherwise ordinary people , especially educated women, seemed incomprehensible but as a symptom of mental disorder. The willingness to engage in violence seemed out of all proportion to the alleged offense.

The vicious hatred of leftist mobs in blue cities resembled that of those that terrorized Paris during the French Revolution, or of Mao’s Red Guards. They seemed no different than gigantic lynch mobs bent upon destroying all that civilization had built up over centuries, and venting their fury on all forms of authority and tradition.

But I’ve never quite had the diagnostic vocabulary to describe the nature of the disorder affecting so many of our fellow citizens. Nor did I realize that Nietzsche had so eloquently described it one hundred fifty years ago.

This, in short, is a deeply articulate analysis of the psychological, even neurological basis of the “insanity” of so many millions throughout the Western world today.

At another level, there is I think, a religious element to this phenomenon, involving a profound yet utterly unwarranted sense of collective guilt and a self-flagellating impulse of atonement manifest in the sort of nihilism that Dostoyevsky would recognize.
